Thanks for your reply – I do know that not everyone is like these mothers, as I have some awesome friends who have awesome kids who also have autism.

As for retesting Maura – there really is no need. We know she doesn’t have autism. Nor Asperger’s, not even PDD-NOS. We had her tested at age two by a pediatric psychologist who specialized in autism (we sent Maura’s file to the Developmental and Behavioral clinic at U of M and this is what they decided to test her for.) Her first preschool teacher taught in autism classrooms and never saw it in Maura. Nor did her pediatrician, neurologist, or geneticist. Nor the specialist in genetics we saw at the Cleveland Clinic. Or any of the therapists and teachers who have worked with her. Or her new GP or her new neurologist. We’ve been to a lot of specialists, etc, and I’m pretty confident at this point that if she did have autism, someone would have mentioned it in the past seven years

Phoebe~ I am so sorry you went through that. PLEASE understand that not all of us wife and or mothers of children with Autism are like that!!!!!! I would have welcomed you with open arms!!! I would however, revisit the option of your daughter having Autism, especially since your son has Asperger’s, which after reading a few times sounds like you learned after all the testing with your daughter. Family history is a big part of the evaluation. I applaud your efforts to reach out to other parents and even finding help for your children.. Having any kind of special needs kid(s) takes a pretty special parent~ like you! I wish you and your family well… Take care.. OXOXOX ~Kate

Something to explain why she has these issues. If she has some rare genetic disorder or if they’re all caused by the seizure activity in her brain. If she has something, then it might give us a glimpse of what can happen in her future. Like people who have kids with autism know that seizures are a possibility. People with kids with Down Syndrome know to be on the look out for heart conditions. But we don’t know what to look out for. Also, with a proper label, it will be easier to get her qualified for things that help out disabled people.

I am wondering what sort of explanations you are looking for. Is it primarily medical problems or are you looking for an answer to the developmental delays in cognitive areas?

This is all very good news — right down to giving you attitude. As much as we parents don’t like the attitude, it is a sign of growth. Hopefully these docs will get her all figured out.
